Your child may now be due their Meningococcal ACWY vaccination, their Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio (Teenage 3 in 1 Booster) vaccination or their Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination. These are part of the childhood immunisation programme.
Why get your child vaccinated?
- Meningococcal ACWY – protects your son/daughter against four types of meningococcal bacteria (Types A, C, W and Y) that cause meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). We strongly urge you to take this opportunity to protect your son/daughter against these four infections which, as you will be aware, can kill or have serious life-long consequences.
- The 3 in 1 booster – protects your son/daughter against Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio, all of which can be very serious diseases. This is a booster for the vaccinations your son/daughter received as a baby, and then again at approximately 3-4 years (the preschool booster).
- The HPV vaccine has been offered to girls in school year 8 for over 10 years. From September 2019, the vaccine will also be offered to boys in year 8. Having the HPV vaccine helps protect both boys and girls from Human Papillomavirus related cancers. The UK programme has already contributed to preventing future deaths from cancer. We expect it to eventually prevent hundreds of cancer deaths every year.

If we don’t receive an electronic consent form, your son/daughter will be given the opportunity to self-consent. The decision to have the vaccination is legally your son/daughter’s as long as they understand the reasons for the vaccination and the issues in giving consent, however the nurse would much rather have your permission as well.
